Take a Hike – Joe’s Woods

The Sandwich Conservation Trust would like you to join us for a spring walk on Sunday, May 12th,
Mother’s Day, at 2 PM. Joe’s Woods is a quiet, wooded, seven acre SCT
preserve located on Roos Road in East Sandwich, but there’s more to it
than that.
Adjacent
to Joe’s is thirty acres of town conservation land which was once
mostly cranberry bogs, with a network of ditches and two pump houses.
The bogs are grown back to woods and the pump houses are mere ruins, but
it’s all interesting, and we will enjoy the emerging foliage. A new
feature is a recently completed loop trail. With the permission of the
town’s Natural Resource Department, the SCT engaged the excellent
services of Americorps – youthful volunteers well trained and organized -
to do the work.
We
will meet at the Quaker Meetinghouse, itself in a peaceful natural
setting, at 2 PM. From the Route 6A and Quaker Meetinghouse Road
intersection, head north on Spring Hill Road, over the railroad
crossing, and take the next left on Quaker Road – the meetinghouse will
be on a rise to the right.
The
walk will last an hour or so, and is easy and level. Take whatever
measures you can to avoid ticks. If it rains the walk will be
cancelled. If you have questions about the walk or the Sandwich
Conservation Trust, call me at (508) 888-7629.
